2012 Elite's race

PARIS MARATHON, SUNDAY 15TH APRIL 2012: A WINDFALL OF RECORDS IN PARIS!

The fresh and sometimes furious wind blowing during the 2012 Paris International Marathon did not prevent the elite runners from smashing both the men and the ladies' records of the race, with the 40,000 participants filling the streets of Paris with their passion once again.

Two records broken at the Paris International Marathon!

Young Kenyan Stanley Biwott built on his win at the 2012 Paris Half Marathon (where he beat the previous record) and carved his mark in the 36th edition of the Paris International Marathon by seizing the win with a record-breaking time of 2 h 05′ 12″ (averaging a speed of 20.22 km/h), more than a minute ahead of his Ethiopian chasers Raji Assefa (2 h 06′ 24″) and Sisay Jisa (2 h 06′ 27″).
The previous men's record was 2 h 05′ 47″, set by Kenya's Vincent Kipruto in 2009.

In the ladies' category, Ethiopia's Tirfe Beyene took both the victory and the race record with a time of 2 h 21′ 40″, far ahead of Turkey's Sultan Haydar (second, 2 h 25′ 09″) and fellow Ethiopian Makda Harun (third, 2 h 26′ 46″).
The previous ladies' record was 2 h 22′ 02″, set by Ethiopia's Astede Bayisa in 2010.

France's Julien Casoli was the best in the disabled athletes' (wheelchair) category, prevailing with a time of 1 h 35′ 56″ He gave it his all on a hotly-contested sprint on Avenue Foch to beat Switzerland's Heinz Frei (1 h 35′ 57″), the winner of the last two editions of the Paris International Marathon, and fellow Frenchman Denis Lemeunier (1 h 35′ 57″).

The newly-crowned French cross country champion, Benjamin Malaty, was the first Frenchman across the line, finishing 19th (2 h 13′ 15″) in his first marathon! The first Frenchwoman was Corinne Herbreteau-Cante, who finished 13th (2 h 42′ 17″) among the ladies.

The Marathon brings everyone together

Just one week from the first round of the 2012 presidential election, the Paris International Marathon brought together all of France in the field of the race and everything surrounding it. United by their efforts but focusing on their own targets, the runners taking part in the 36th edition hurriedly ran by the podiums of the candidates to the top office in France just hours before their meetings on Place de la Concorde and the esplanade in front of the Château de Vincennes.

A furious wind rages during the Marathon

The fresh wind of early April did not dampen the spirits of the 40,000 participants and the passion of the huge crowds watching the 2012 Paris International Marathon. The entire 42.195 km long race enjoyed a warm atmosphere full of colour and music which cheered on the runners in their brave struggle against fatigue and the raging wind.

Amélie Mauresmo and Laurent Jalabert run for a good cause

Amélie Mauresmo carried the banner for the Institut Curie by posting an amazing time of 3 h 16′ 49″ in her very first Paris International Marathon, finishing 45th in her category!. On the other hand, Laurent Jalabert, who was facing yet another challenge by tackling the 42.195 km race, commented the race for France Télévisions and carried a test device which analysed his performance in real time (strides, fatigue indicators, etc.), was applauded when he crossed the finish line in the midst of the field, with a time of 3 h 08′ 25″.

10 km de l'Équipe: the next major race after the Marathon

Lovers of running who have not been satiated by the Paris International Marathon have a new challenge on Sunday, June 24, when they will get the chance to run through three French cities at the 10 km de l'Équipe. This convivial race began in 2011 in Paris and is open to everyone, both individuals and collective challenges ("Duos", "Families", "Friends", Girls' Race", "Companies" or "Students"). This year round, it will also invite thousands of participants to hit the streets of Lyon and Fréjus. On Saturday, June 23, each of these cities will play host to a village where registered athletes will pick up their bibs and enjoy the presence of exhibitors specialising in running and the sponsors of this race without equal.
