Records at the 33rd International Paris Marathon: 2h05’47 for young Kipruto and 2h25’40 for Christelle Daunay
Already famous for revealing the champions of tomorrow and offering a beautiful course, the Paris Marathon can now be proud of being a record breaking marathon!
Young Kenyan Vincent Kipruto beat the event record by close to a minute, managing an extraordinary performance and winning the race in a time of 2h05’47, second best performance of the year only 18” slower than legendary Gebréselasie. Never had a man run in France in under 2h06 and the presence of 6 athletes in less than 2h07 just shows that the International Paris Marathon is among the fastest marathons of the planet.
Taking off at a extremely fast pace, the pack of around 15 runners remained bunched until kilometre 35 where Vincent Kipruto and Bazu Worka pushed harder and dropped all their rivals. Kipruto, a 22-year-old Kenyan then gradually pulled away from his last companion, the very young (18 years of age) winner of the Paris Semi–Marathon and newcomer on the distance Worka of Ethiopia (2h06’15). Other Kenyan David Kiyeng completes the final podium in a time of 2h06’26… still under the former best performance of the event.
In the women’s race, France’s Christelle Daunay also managed a very smart race, capturing third spot and especially beating her former French National record, clocking a time under the 2h26 mark, in 2h25’44. She enters the World elite club. Ahead of her were only two Ethiopians: Atsede Bayisa who won the race in 2h24’42 and Aselefech Mergia second in 2h25’02.
Concerning the ‘’Handisports” race, Australia’s Kurt Fearnley, uncontested leader of the discipline powered to victory in a time of 1h31’09.
31 373 competitors started this 33rd edition of the International Paris Marathon on the Champs-Elysées in an extremely festive atmosphere. The last runners crossed the start line while the leaders were already at the Place de la Nation...
All along the course, from Bastille to the Quai de Seine going through the Bois de Boulogne, over 250 000 fans were present to sheer the competitors and make the best of the 75 musical and festive animations in the streets of the capital.
